Rebus: shot on ARRI Alexa 35 and Angénieux Optimo zooms

BBC One · BBC Scotland · Eleventh Hour Films · 2024

Ian Rankin’s detective returned to the screen in 2024, with Richard Rankin as a younger, harder-edged John Rebus, written by Gregory Burke and set in an Edinburgh where nobody is quite what they seem. It’s a world of dark streets, rain and shadow, and the camera package came from Progressive.

The camera: ARRI Alexa 35
Rebus lives at night, in rain and in shadow. The Alexa 35’s huge dynamic range and clean, rich low-light performance hold detail deep in the darks while keeping street lights and car headlamps under control. It’s just what a moody crime drama needs.

The zooms: Angénieux Optimo 15–40mm and 45–120mm
On a fast-moving drama with lots of locations, a matched pair of Optimos lets the camera team reframe in seconds without a lens change. Wide for Edinburgh’s closes and streets, long for tense, intimate close-ups, with the same Angénieux look across both.
