Channel 4’s Screw is set on C Wing of Long Marsh, a men’s prison, where veteran officer Leigh Henry (Nina Sosanya) tries to keep control and new recruit Rose Gill (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) is thrown in at the deep end. Created by Rob Williams, who drew on his own work in prisons, it mixes dark comedy with real emotional stakes.
Director of Photography Arthur Mulhern shot the series on our ARRI Alexa Mini LF with our Tokina Vista One primes. The Vista Ones’ single-coated glass takes the edge off the hard, institutional surfaces of the prison and keeps the faces warm. That suits a show that is as much about the people working inside as the place itself.
It was filmed in 2021 at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, where a three-storey prison wing was built in the studio, with further scenes at the former Peterhead Prison.
