When gruff farmer Dinah (Golda Rosheuvel) reluctantly takes in her niece Charlie, she discovers the girl has a gift for growing things, and soon they’re entering a giant pumpkin in a cut-throat contest. Directed by John McPhail and co-starring Nick Frost, this warm family comedy was filmed around Edinburgh and premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2025. The camera package came from Progressive. To us, it’ll always be “Peter”: the working title on our paperwork and, fittingly, the name of the film’s star pumpkin.
The camera: ARRI Alexa Mini LF
Gardens, allotments, glowing autumn colour and one very large pumpkin: Grow is a film that needs to look rich and warm. The Mini LF’s large-format sensor gives that gorgeous depth and colour, in a body compact enough to get in among the vegetable patches.

The zooms: Zeiss CZ.2 70–200mm and 28–80mm
A pair of compact cinema zooms with a constant T2.9 across the range. The 28–80 covers everything from wide establishing shots to mid shots. The 70–200 reaches in for tight close-ups and compresses the background, perfect for picking out faces, and Peter, in a crowded pumpkin show.
