Vigil’s first series is a thriller set largely aboard a nuclear submarine, where everything hangs on tension, faces and confined spaces. For much of it, DP Matt Gray BSC turned to the Tokina Vista One primes, alongside anamorphics for the moments he wanted to open the frame out.
Why the Tokinas? Their single-coated front element gives a softer, more textured image with gentle flare, so the light feels part of the scene rather than sitting on top of it. As Matt put it, “We could get more texture across the Tokina lens.”He found the 35mm to 40mm range kept the audience right alongside the characters as events unfolded.
